About FIRSTFIRST logo

What is FIRST? FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology". Founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. The creator of FIRST is Dean Kamen. "FIRST is more than robots. The robots are a vehicle for students to learn important life skills. Kids often come in not knowing what to expect - of the program nor of themselves. They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with confidence, and with a sense that they can create their own future," - Dean Kamen. FIRST's main philosophy is Gracious Professionalism. It was introduced by Woodie Flowers. He coined the term on explaining that is was to learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process. In the short season of 2019-20: 679,000+ students, 320,000+ mentors, coaches, judges, and volunteers, 18% year-over-year growth in students reached globally. In the 2020 FIRST Robotics Competition: 97,850 students and 3,914 individual teams. For more information on FIRST, please visit firstinspires.org.
